Hohenfels potash mine and ammunition works, Wehmingen, Hannover

The Hannover Tramway Museum has been created in the Hohenfels potash mine and ammunition works, Wehmingen, to the Southeast of Hannover. It worked as a potash mine from 1897 to 1928 but the shaft was still used until 1985. The site was used as an ammunition facilty from 1937 to 1945 and then an army base.

Other sites

The sawmill is in the village of Wehmingen and I noticed its minimal railway line while waiting for the bus.

The Harz Railway and the Silver Mines

The Harz Schmalspurbahn is a lengthy metre-gauge system on the Eastern side of the Harz mountains, including the ascent of the 3700 ft Brocken, the highest peak in Northern Germany. The Harz Mountains are well-known for their silver mines.

The Main Line from Wernigerode to Nordhausen

The Main Line from Wernigerode to Nordhausen runs to Drie Annen Hohne, the junction of the Brocken line. From there it goes to Eisfelder Talmuhle, the junction for the Selketal line and on to Ilfeld and from there it shares the line to Nordhausen with the Nordhausen tram network.

Up the Brocken Mountain

The Brocken Mountain stands at 3700ft (1100m) high, the highest peak in Northern Germany with a Soviet era radio on top, a totally inaccessible place before re-unification. The branch from Drei Annen Hohne corkscrews its way to the top. Down trains pull into a layby siding to let the up trains pass without breaking their stride.

The Selketal Line

The Selketal Line runs from Quedlinburg to a junction with the Nordhausen line at Eisfelder Talmuhle, passing through Alexisbad, Harzgerode and Hasselfelds. Occasional trains run the whole length of the line but the main service is only between Quedlinburg and Alexisbad.
